Welcome to Kittiwake Class!
On this page you will find weekly updates about what the children are learning in literacy, maths and phonics so you can support at home. Our termly curriculum maps provide an outline of what the children will learn across all subjects. More detailed information for a particular subject can be found in the curriculum area of the website.
Week beginning 30th January
In Literacy we will be looking at instruction writing and discussing the layout and structure of instructions.
In Phonics we will be learning different ways of spelling the /n/ sound - n as in nail, ne as in gone, nn as in dinner, kn as in knee and gn as in gnat.
In Maths we will be continuing to learn about multiplication. We will begin to learn times tables and it is important the children are able to count in tens, fives and twos.
In our mental maths we will focussing on teen numbers and thinking of them as 'ten and a bit'.
Week beginning 23rd January
In Literacy we will be writing our own story based on 'The Bog Baby' with a different creature in a differnt setting.
In Phonics we will be learning more ways of spelling the /oe/ sound - oe as in toe, o as in over and ough as in though.
In Maths we will be beginning to learn about multiplication and introducing the X symbol.
In our mental maths we will re-capping the strategies we have learnt and choosing the most appropriate strategy to solve a calculation.
Week beginning 16th January
In Literacy we will be continuing analysing the structure of the story The Bog Baby' by Jeanne Willis. We will beging to plan our own story about finding an unusual creature in a different setting.
In Phonics we will be beginning to learn different ways of spelling the /oe/ sound - o-e as in home, ow as in grow and oa as in boat.
In Maths we will be subtracting with two 2-digit numbers that cross a tens boundary. We will learn this as a three stage process. First partition the second number into tens and ones. Then subtract the tens. Then subtract the ones. E.g. 56 - 27. First partition 27 into 20 and 7. Then subtract the tens, 56 - 20 = 36. Then subtract the ones, 36 - 7 = 29.
In our mental maths we will learning about the '7 tree' and the '9 square'. This gives the children a visual image of the number 7 and number 9 and helps them to remember related number facts.
Week beginning 9th January
In Literacy we will be sharing the story The Bog Baby' by Jeanne Willis and finding out this is the special creature that lives in the special habitat! We will be familiarising ourselves with the book in preparation for future writing activities.
In Phonics we will be learning different ways of spelling the /i/ sound - i as in bin, ui as in built, e as in jacket and y as in hymn.
In Maths we will be adding two 2-digit numbers that cross the tens. We will learn this as a three stage process. First partition the second nunber into tens and ones. Then add on the tens. Then add on the ones. E.g. 36 + 25. First partition 25 into 20 and 5. Then add on the tens, 36 + 20 = 56. Then add on the ones, 56 + 5 = 61.
In our mental maths we will be continuing to learn that 'number neighbours' have a difference of 1, e.g. 5 and 6 are number neighbours so 6 - 5 = 1, and that 'next door odds' and 'next door evens' have a difference of 2, e.g. 4 and 6 are 'next door evens' so 6 - 4 = 2 and 5 and 7 are 'next door odds' so 7 - 5 = 2.
