‘Being kind to yourself is one of the greatest kindnesses.’
Charles Mackesy

At Burnham on Sea Infant School, PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We aim to provide our children with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community. Children learn to understand and respect our differences and diversity so that they are prepared for life in our ever-changing world.

Our PSHE curriculum both enhances and is supported by other curriculum areas. Our curriculum reflects the importance we place on our children’s mental health and well-being, and we work collaboratively with our school pastoral team to ensure knowledge and resources are shared. We believe we can enrich our children’s education and help them to become caring, respectful and confident individuals.

We deliver Personal, Social, Health Education using Jigsaw – the mindful approach to PSHE’ and No Outsiders - ' We Belong Here, an approach to teaching diversity and equality.

What is Jigsaw?
Throughout our Jigsaw scheme of learning, our children acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. It develops the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society, and the global community.

Jigsaw lessons have a “strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health…they also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.”

Jigsaw is implemented through whole class lessons focusing on different topics each term. Children are supported and encouraged to use the skills they are developing throughout their school day, and make links to other areas of their learning.

What is No Outsiders?
We believe in preparing children for life in modern Britain.

At our school there are no outsiders. We are all different, unique and special and we believe that this is something worth celebrating.

The 'No Outsiders' programme educates children about diversity within our communities and addresses issues such as sexism, ageism, race and different types of families.

It is taught to each year group through the use of age-appropriate picture books. Through these books, the children explore the concepts of equality, diversity, acceptance of differences and of the right of someone to have an opinion different to their own.

How does No Outsiders fit into the curriculum?
The No Outsiders lessons fit alongside many of the things we already teach in school. They align with our core values and also link strongly with our relationships' education lessons, which are part of our PSHE and RSHE lessons as well as collective worship.

We have a clear learning journey in PSHE which constantly makes links and builds on knowledge from previous years. Our dedicated staff model and promote kindness in a safe, open and positive learning environment based on trusting relationships which encourages children to talk confidently, honestly and respectfully about a wide range of personal, social and health topics.  We aim to ensure all information is relevant and realistic so that our children are provided with the best possible preparation for life. If you have any questions, please contact your child's class teacher.

RHSE (Relationships, Health and Sex Education)

At Burnham on Sea Infant School, we believe each child should be valued and understood as an individual: academically, socially and emotionally. The principal focus of Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RHSE) teaching is to enable our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society.

“Today’s children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world and living their lives seamlessly on and offline. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. In this environment, children and young people need to know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way.”

“ These subjects represent a huge opportunity to help our children and young people develop. The knowledge and attributes gained will support their own, and others’ wellbeing and attainment and help young people to become successful and happy adults who make a meaningful contribution to society.”

Secretary of State Foreword, DfE Guidance 2019

We teach about relationships, sex and health education through different aspects of our curriculum. Relationships and Health Education plays an essential part in our curriculum throughout the school year, and while we carry out the main RHSE education in our PHSE lessons, some aspects are taught through Science Computing, Religious Education and Physical Education. RSHE is also an important part of our assemblies where children’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured. We deliver the RSHE curriculum through quality first teaching, the sharing of good practice and a whole school approach which follows our three school values, developing children who are kind, curious and dedicated.

In term six, we write to all families to inform them of what will be taught as part of our RSE (Relationship and Sex Education) curriculum using the Jigsaw theme ‘Changing Me’. This ensures we establish a partnership which allows us to listen to questions and concerns from families, and to share our approaches and strategies so that we are mutually supportive.
