We believe art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. At Burnham on Sea Infant School,  we have carefully designed our curriculum to deliver a high-quality art and design education to engage, inspire and challenge children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they are able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They learn how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Following the National curriculum, children learn the the progression of skills through

• Being able to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
• Becoming proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques through mixed media and being taught how to appreciate, discuss and critique artwork through the teaching of the work of influential artists, craftspeople and architects and movements (art in history)
• Evaluating and analysing creative works using the language of art, craft and design
• Learning about the work of influential artists, craftspeople and architects and movements (art in history), and understanding the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

 It is paramount that artwork is purposeful; be this as a means of expression or to explore the styles of other artists that inspire our own work.

In art and design, children are expected to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and keep improving.  Children are encouraged to take risks and experiment and then reflect on why some ideas and techniques are successful or not for a particular project. Every child will leave Berrow an artist.
